Wish You Were Here: The CFCMI Experience

… So, so you think you can tell heaven from hell?

Blue skies from pain?

Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?

A smile from a veil?

Do you think you can tell?

… Did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?

Hot ashes for trees?

Hot air for a cool breeze?

Cold comfort for change?

Did you exchange a walk on part in the war

For a lead role in a cage?

… How I wish, how I wish you were here

We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl

Year after year

Running over the same old ground, what have we found?

The same old fears, wish you were here

“Wish You Were Here” by Pink Floyd captures the essence of the Christian Fellowship experience.

I felt compelled to post these lyrics in the blog when I was listening to music this morning while mowing my lawn and the song came on.

There are other songs that do a good job of describing CFCMI as well (“Hotel California” by the Eagles or, for those who experienced the Norfolk women’s ministry, “Positively 4th Street” by Bob Dylan). For me, though, “Wish You Were Here” is pitch perfect.

Feel free to comment below, as I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially if you have a song or some poetry that does the same thing for you.
